Temperatures in Yakushima

The following table gives annual temperatures for Yakushima in degrees Celsius. It can however be quite deceptive as in the summer with high humidity it can get appallingly hot and in the winter, teeth-chatteringly cold.

Below the table are the temperatures at each of the mountain huts (very important information if you intend to stay the night) which vary from the chart considerably.

Month Average Temperature Maximum Temperature Minimum Temperature
Jan 12.3 15.3 9
Feb 14.4 17.1 11.5
March 14.5 17.5 11.6
April 20.2 23.7 17.1
May 22.8 25.6 20.2
June 24.3 27.3 21.6
July 27 30.8 23.6
Aug 28 32.2 24.2
Sept 26.4 29.6 23.6
Oct 23.3 26 20.6
Nov 18.7 21.6 15.6
Dec 15 17.7 12.2

There are however variations on the above depending on how high you are on the mountains.

The general rule is that for every 100m you climb the temperature decreases by 0.6 degrees C. This means that you should allow for the following temperature changes in the mountains:

  • At Jomon Sugi (1300m) the temperature is 7.8 degrees below the temperatures in the above table.
  • At the summit of Mt.Miyanoura (1936m) it is 11.6 degrees below.
  • At Shiratani Unsuikyo (825m) it is 5 degrees below.
  • At Takatsu hut (1330m) it is 8 degrees below.
  • At Shintakatsu hut (1460m) it is 8.8 degrees below.
  • At Shikanosawa hut (1550m) it is 9.3 degrees below.
  • At Yodogawa hut (1380m) it is 8.3 degrees below.
  • At Ishizuka hut (1600m) it is 9.6 degrees below.

I love huge cedar but could not live without banana growing near my window.
Why can I find no banana growing on Yakushima?
Or are there just no photos because banana trees are taken for granted?
Or is it impossible to keep them alive for the monkeys not only eat the fruit but the trunks?
Or are they kept out as non-native habitat?

What about the water temperature? Can you go swimming on late March/Early April?

Of course you can but it´s a bit cold! The Kuroshio current which flows around Yakushima has an average water temperature of 24ªC (75ªF) which is distinctively warm for this area but the weather can still be a bit chilly for swimming.

    Hi!
Thanks a lot for the very informative website.
Any idea what is the condition right now in the mountains?
Is there a lot of snow?
Any possibility to reach Miyanoura-dake (with or without snow gear)?
    Best.
