Hi, I'm going to Yakushima next week and I bought your book, it's very useful, thanks for writing a great book!

I'm a little worried about what I read about the possibility of snakes… Is this something that is very rare and has there been any incidents where people have been attacked by snakes in Shiratani Unsuikyo? What do we do in the event that we are bitten by a snake?

Would you be able to update the low tides for December 2010 in the next few days?

    Many thanks.

Low tides for Dec 2010 have been added.

Most people never see snakes on Yakushima. The trails are too well used and snakes avoid contact with humans whenever possible. If there was one ahead, the noise from your walking would send it scuttling away before you arrived. The only snake bites I'm aware of on Yakushima are from farmers working in their fields.

In the unlikely event a hiker was bitten, you would return down the mountain with a description of the snake and receive treatment in the hospital but you've got more chance to win the lottery or crash in the plane coming over than be bitten by a snake.

Thanks much for putting up the Dec tides and setting my mind at ease. I shall wear heavy boots!
