HOW MUCH IS IT?

This also changes with the season but it should be around:

Single: 8,300 yen

Return:15,000 yen

Please note that these prices don’t include the fuel surcharge which is being charged at the moment. This happens sometimes but usually only with the plane. Anyway the charge is 1200 yen per person (half for children).

WHAT’S IT LIKE?

You get to choose whether to sit on the upper or lower floor but once you sit, that’s it. You can’t wander around as you would on a ferry. There’s a drink machine and toilets and an attendant who will tell you off if you do decide to stretch your legs. The best thing about the Toppy jetfoil is that it is fast. If time is an issue, it’s a good choice.

You can see how the seating is arranged in the following video.

HOW DO I GET A TICKET?

Buying jetfoil tickets in advance is rather like pulling teeth. It can be done however.

1. If you read Japanese you can go right to their website: www.tykousoku.jp

2. If their website is an incomprehensible jumble of strange shapes, then your next option is to try asking your accommodation for help. Many offer this service anyway for their guests and will happily book for you – just ask!

3. Another option is a local Japanese travel agency (Yakushima travel) which has a very convenient booking service for Jetfoil tickets. They will reserve the tickets for you in advance for a 500 yen fee. They have an English page YAKUSHIMA TRAVEL

4. The other option which guarantees the tickets physically in your hands is to buy directly from the window of the Jetfoil port in Kagoshima. This is how most people do it!

DO THEY HAVE A WEBSITE?

Yes, it’s www.tykousoku.jp. But it’s in Japanese!

WHERE DOES THE JETFOIL LEAVE FROM?

The Tane-yaku jetfoil port 種子・屋久高速船旅客ターミナル is near the center of Kagoshima, next to the Dolphin Port entertainment area. It’s easy to find and, depending on your luggage, is perfectly walkable from the center of the city.
